Well if your a monk studying in Rome and you travel around on rollarblades you can bet people are going to notice - Brother Anthony Ariniello is that monk. Brother Ariniello is preparing for the priesthood with one of the newest Church communities, the Community of the Beatitudes. Read more about this modern monk from Catholic News Agency.

Superbowl Champs

 
By now I think most people are aware of Green Bay's victory over the Steelers in Superbowl XLV. Needless to say the Catholic priest chaplain of the Packers, Father Jim Baraniak, has gotten quite a bit of attention about his role as football chaplain. Father James Baraniak, O. Praem. (Norbertines) has one lucky assignment right now - he is the chaplain of the Green Bay Packers which means he'll be at the SuperBowl this year. Fathers for Good recently ran a story on Fr. Baraniak and what his priestly duties to the Packers are - take a look here.

Run Bishops Run

 

What do you do when your cathedral is over 2 million dollars in debt - or what do you do when you want to increase awareness of vocations? Well according to two bishops you run a marathon. Bishop Thomas Paprocki of the Diocese of Springfield, Ill is running a marathon to help pay off the debt incurred from the restoration of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Pretty smart idea there! Auxiliary Bishop James Conley of the Archdiocese of Denver will also run in the marathon, but for a different reason. Bishop Conley will be running to raise awareness for vocations to the  priesthood. He will be joined by archdiocesan vocations director Fr. Jim Crisman and two seminarians from St. John Vianney Seminary in his efforts. Good luck to all of them! Read a few stories about these marathon runners here, here, here and here.

The Calling Video

Take a look at this great video below - takes you on a journey through the lives of 3 men and how they heard the priestly call. They each had very different lives, one an avid outdoorsman, another a businessman, and a final baseball player and fan. Enjoy!

Soccer Tournament

The 2010 Clericus Cup is underway. The Clericus Cup is a soccer tournament representing seminaries all throughout the world - this year their are 16 teams. In the first match the Pontifical North American College came up victorious over the Brazilian college. Redemptoris Mater, Neocatecheumenal Way Seminary, seems to be the team to beat with 2 out of the last 3 trophies. From Olympics to Convent

 
Kirstin Holum made quite a name for herself in women's speedskating - she competed in the Olypic Winter Games in Nagano, Japan in 1998 and placed 6th in the 3,000 meters. Nagano was the last time Kristin put on skates in a comeptitive event and her life began to change from that point on. At Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Portugal Spain a calling to religious life began for Kristin; and she responded! She is now a sister with the Franciscan Sisters of the Renewal and goes by Sister Catherine. She uses her life story in speedskating to witness what God can do in the life of any person - even a speedskater! Read more about Sister Catherine's life from Yahoo Sports.

Basketball and Vocations

 
The new Bishop of the Allentown Diocese, John Barres, took some time out of Catholic Schools Week to meet with some high school students. He spoke with them on the basketball court - the event was called Buckets with the Bishop. On the court he spoke to them about the values basketball teaches about life, and even challenged one his priests to a 3 point contest (the Bishop won). After all the Bishop did play basketball at Princeton in our Diocese! Never know if this will bear more lasting fruit in  the lives of the young men present - maybe even a call to the priesthood. Superbowl

 
There is no doubt that New Orleans has a rich Catholic history - well their football team is no different. The Saints have always had a close relationship with the Archdiocese of New Orleans. In fact when they were first choosing the name in 1967 they approached the Archdiocese to see if it would be sacrilegious - we obviously know how the Archdiocese answered. Alsothe current owner of the team, Mr. Tom Benson, has invited Archbishop Gregory Aymond, retired Archbishop Philip Hannan and two Dominican sisters as his personal guests. The Colts also have a Catholic connection. They have a Catholic priest chaplain, Fr. Peter Gallagher, who offers Mass before games and prayers before and after games. Fr. Gallagher did an interview with Catholic News Agency about his role as chaplain - read here.
